My Guitar’s Been in the Attic for 20 Years. Is it Dead?

It’s possible that it is dead, but it is also possible that it is just fine. If you don’t see any obvious damage (warping, wood splitting, broken strings, etc.), go ahead and tune it up and see what it does.

Best case scenario, the only thing it needs is a new set of strings and a good wipedown.

If you are unsure of the guitar’s condition, take it to a guitar shop for a check-up. Your guitar may need some TLC and maintenance to bring it back to good playable condition (a neck adjustment, new strings, and a good cleaning, for instance). The pros at the guitar shop should be able to give you an assessment of what it needs and what it will cost.
